Conservation, Resources Management, and Parks

Dr. Kushlan’s research programs in southern Florida and elsewhere generally were designed to have conservation and resource management implications. His contributions to scholarship in conservation include such areas as:

  • waterbird conservation
  • wetland conservation and management
  • parks and protected areas
  • species conservation planning
  • endangered species
  • waterbird conservation history
  • bird-friendly landscaping for southern Florida

He also has engaged in conservation issues as a member of national and international boards and committees, founded and led conservation initiatives, and written conservation plans. Among those plans were endangered species recovery plans, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, the North American Waterbird Plan, and the global plan for heron conservation. He also has written on the use of private and public gardens in bird conservation as it uniquely applies in southern Florida.
